Tooth filling in Kolkata: cost, types and what to expect

Quick answer: A tooth filling at Teeth Care starts at INR 600 for GIC and INR 800 for a tooth-coloured composite filling. Most fillings take 20 to 45 minutes in a single visit. If the decay has already reached the nerve, a filling will not hold and the tooth needs a root canal instead.

Most cavities are found before they hurt. A dark spot on a back tooth, a twinge with cold water, food that keeps catching in the same gap. Many of our patients describe it as "daant mein keeda laga hai". There is no worm, of course. It is bacteria dissolving the enamel, and a small cavity caught at that stage is the cheapest and quickest thing we treat.

Leave it, and the same hole reaches the soft layer underneath, then the nerve. The bill grows at each step, from a filling to a root canal to a crown. This page sets out what a filling costs at our five Kolkata branches, which material suits which tooth, and how to tell whether a filling is still enough.

Tooth Filling Cost in Kolkata

Filling type Starting price per tooth Best for
GIC (glass ionomer)From INR 600Cavities near the gum line, milk teeth, low-pressure areas
GIC miracle mixFrom INR 700Stronger GIC for back teeth in children and as a base
Composite (tooth-coloured)From INR 800Front and back teeth where looks and strength both matter
Composite build-upFrom INR 1,500Rebuilding a large broken area, often before a crown

All figures are starting prices. The final cost depends on how many surfaces of the tooth the cavity covers and is confirmed after an examination and, where needed, an X-ray.

Which Filling Material Is Right for You

Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material bonded to the tooth in thin layers and hardened with a blue light. It matches your natural shade, so it is the usual choice for front teeth and most back teeth. Because it bonds to the enamel, the dentist removes less healthy tooth than with older materials. A well-placed composite commonly lasts 5 to 10 years.

Glass ionomer (GIC) releases fluoride slowly, which helps protect the tooth around it from fresh decay. It tolerates a little moisture during placement, which makes it useful near the gum line and in children's teeth. It is not as strong or as glossy as composite, so it is less suited to the chewing surfaces of adult molars.

Silver amalgam was the standard for decades and is very durable, but it is grey, it does not bond to the tooth, and its use has been declining worldwide. Most patients today choose composite. If you have old silver fillings that are cracked or leaking, they can be replaced with tooth-coloured ones.

For a cavity so large that little tooth is left around it, a filling alone may crack the tooth. In that case we build the tooth up and protect it with a crown.

Signs You Need a Filling

  • A brief twinge with cold, sweet or sour food that goes away in a few seconds
  • A visible dark spot, pit or hole, often on the chewing surface
  • Food that keeps catching between the same two teeth
  • Floss that shreds in one particular spot
  • A rough edge your tongue keeps finding

Short, sharp sensitivity can also come from worn enamel or receding gums rather than decay. Our article on treatments for sensitive teeth covers that side.

Filling or Root Canal?

The question we hear most is whether a tooth can still be filled. The answer depends on how deep the decay has gone, and the pain pattern usually tells us before the X-ray does.

What you feel What it usually means Likely treatment
Brief twinge with cold or sweets, gone in secondsDecay in enamel or dentinFilling
Pain that lingers for a minute or more after coldNerve is inflamedPossibly a deep filling, often RCT
Throbbing pain, worse at night or lying downNerve is infectedRoot canal treatment
Swelling or a bump on the gumInfection has spread past the rootRoot canal treatment or extraction

Pain that wakes you up is past the filling stage. We explain why in why tooth pain gets worse at night. If you do need a root canal, our root canal treatment page explains the procedure, and the RCT cost guide breaks down the price.

What Happens During a Filling

  1. The dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray if the cavity is between teeth or looks deep.
  2. A local anaesthetic numbs the tooth. Very small cavities sometimes do not need it.
  3. The decayed part is removed and the cavity is cleaned.
  4. For composite, the tooth is prepared with a bonding agent and the material is added in thin layers, each hardened with a curing light.
  5. The filling is shaped, your bite is checked on a thin paper, and the surface is polished.

One filling usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. You can eat once the numbness wears off. Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days afterwards is normal; sensitivity that gets worse, or pain when biting, means the bite needs adjusting and you should come back.
